Individual Project II
Fidget Spinner

Our second individual project took form in a 3D printed fidget spinner. The fidget spinner project was an intro into the world of 3D printing with the SolidWorks model, critical dimension test print, and final working model.

Fidget Spinner: Projects

Objective & Process

The goal of this project was to design, model, and test a fidget spinner of my own unique design. The process involved in creating this fidget spinner included multiple SolidWorks models, a test print of the critical dimension for the bearing hole, as well as final assembly and test use of the fidget spinner.

Fidget Spinner: Projects

Modeling in SolidWorks

This project began with an individual idea for a fidget spinner that came to life within the SolidWorks program. I created an identical top and bottom piece for my fidget spinner due to the tendency for 3D printed models to shrink with time. I chose my dimensions for my fidget spinner carefully so that it would be small enough to spin in between one's fingers.

Critical Print

I chose to do a critical print to ensure that my bearing would fit within the bearing hole I cut out in my fidget spinner. I created a cylinder with varying widths inside, the measurements being .877" for the top section, .872" for the middle, and .867", the measured width of the bearing itself, for the bottom. .872" was found to be the width that fit the fidget spinner the best.

Final Print & Model

My 3D print of my fidget spinner came out successfully. The bearing fit inside the mold and it spun as intended. It also accurately depicts the trademark of Disney, Mickey Mouse's head.

Reflection

  • Conducted precise careful measurements to the thousandths of an inch

  • Test printed a critical dimension of ensure a working prototype

  • In hindsight would enlarge the center circle to fit more comfortably in hand

  • Would make the necessary adjustments to increase the overall mass of the fidget spinner to allow it to spin for a longer period of time
